ENVIRONMENTAL ACTION ALERT!

A rock quarry operation on the Upper Guadalupe River is threatening the future of the river, endangering the lives of Kerr County residents, polluting the air, soil and water, reducing property values and the quality of life in Center Point and turning the area into a virtual moonscape devoid of the historical, natural scenery of the beautiful Upper Guadalupe River. Please visit the Environmental section of our website for information about this issue and actions you can take TODAY to help curb this runaway nightmare.

Swiftwater Rescue
Land-Based Class
Saturday, May 10

On Saturday, May 10, beginning at 1:00 PM, Ken Lock will teach a basic Swiftwater Rescue Class at the White Rock Lake Bathhouse Cultural Center (outside). There is no fee for participation, and this class is strongly recommended for those who have never had a SWR class, or need to improve their basic skills in self-rescue, throwbag drills, knot tying and other exercises that are fundamental to all SWR classes and live rescue situations.

The primary focus of this class will be self-rescue. Other topics of discussion will include avoiding and escaping hydraulics, strainers and other hazards that may be encountered on a river trip. This class typically costs $75.00, so getting it for free is even more valuable. If enough interest is shown, then a formal, 2-day river-based class will be scheduled for this summer or early fall.

Items to bring with you include a lawn chair, drinking water, snacks, a throw bag and 6 feet of rope suitable for knot tying.

Swiftwater rescue classes are strongly recommended for anybody who paddles moving water rivers. The life you save MAY be your own! Be sure to take advantage of this opportunity to learn some basic techniques and theory about how to effectively assist yourself and your fellow paddlers in an emergency situation.

Join DDRC Today!

Dues are just $20.00 per year (due in January or pro-rated for new members $20 to 6/30 $10 after 7/1) which includes a monthly newsletter of current trips, reports and events. You can join by completing the application for membership.

WE WANT YOUR HELP! These pages are a free riversport information resource. These are your pages. We need your input here on the bulletin board to keep these pages current and to let others know what is happening on (and to) our rivers in the Southwest. Please share your experiences, your trip reports, new web links, river conditions, etc. If you find any dead or changed links, let us know. What trips are happening? What paddling clinics are planned? Got a boat or some gear for sale? This is the place to let others know about it.

See ya on the river

We need your help!

The City of Dallas is trying to force the building of two needless reservoirs in East Texas that threaten to drown the Sulphur River and the Upper Neches River forest land before the US Fish and Wildlife Service can get it designated as a National Wildlife Refuge. Read the article and then contact City Hall to express your displeasure and objections!

Additional information about environmental matters locally and nationally can be found on the "Environment" section of this web site, which includes links to activist groups that can keep you informed about problems and put you in contact with the appropriate city, state and federal leaders who have oversight into these matters.

A couple of critical Texas environmental issues are brewing, and your personal involvement is needed to help set the direction for where future environmental efforts lead us. Details are on the Environmental page and a subpage at the Current Texas Issues link.
