Trip Description:

The Gulf Thanksgiving trip will now be at the LCRA Matagorda Nature park.

Matagorda Bay Nature Park is a 1,600-acre park and preserve at the mouth of the Colorado River on the Matagorda Peninsula. The park has about two miles of Gulf of Mexico and two miles river frontage and hundreds of acres of coastal marshes and dunes. It is one of the best birding areas in the nation. LCRA acquired the property in 2001 as part of its commitment to preserve natural resources for future generations and to provide science education, recreation and nature tourism opportunities.

The park contains a small store, a canoe rental facility, a coin-operated laundry room and modern bathrooms with showers located conveniently right in the middle of the campground. There also is a nice ocean fishing pier, and a nature center in the park.

Our campsite will have an unobstructed river view. I will bring a canopy so we can rig up a wind block for the kitchen. There is no entrance fee or gate, but there is a charge for the campsites, which vary depending on the type . We may visit a seafood restaurant in nearby Matagorda on Friday evening and we will have our Thanksgiving Potluck on Saturday evening. This is an opportunity to try out your boat in the ocean, some fishing in the bay, and explore the kayak trails in the marsh.

Directions: You can take I 45 south to Houston, then southwest on 59 to Wharton, then south on 60 to Matagorda, then continue a few miles down 2031 to the park. The park is on a barrier island next to where the Colorado enters the gulf.
