The Alamo City Rivermen are hosting their 21th Annual Freeze Trip on the weekend of January 19-20, 2008. This year's trip will again be on the San Marcos River due to a burn ban in Bastrop County.
The trip will base camp at Pecan Park Retreat in Martindale, and those interested in paddling the river can arrange groups and shuttles for the reaches they want to paddle on Friday, Saturday and/or Sunday. The Dutch oven meal cost for Saturday night is just $6.00 per person, and you are requested to RSVP to Gib Hafernick at Gibguy76@yahoo.com, or call Gib at 210-492-7517 with the number of people who will be in your group. You can also contact Marc McCord via e-mail at canoeman@canoeman.com, or call 214-221-1290 in lieu of contacting Gib. Registration and payment will be done on the island. The meal is always a great value, and delicious! Having an accurate count is critical so that ACR can have enough food for all who come, so please let Gib know you are coming ASAP. Paddlers can meet at Pecan Park Retreat to arrange shuttles, or just start paddling downriver from there - there will be plenty of rides available to retrieve cars after you arrive at the take-out of your choice at the end of the trip. Some people will arrive as early as Friday, and impromptu groups will paddle various reaches of the river on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. This is a great opportunity to join other paddlers from all over Texas for this annual event. Gib will also need some assistance with gathering together enough Dutch ovens, stoves, charcoal, propane, pots and pans and the ingredients, which include beef clog, carrots, potatoes, onions and similar fare. Each person should bring his or her own plates, flatware and drinking cups. Additionally, we will need firewood, so if you have any cut wood available, then please bring as much as you can carry, especially since you will NOT need to carry it in your boats. Because of an Act of God (burn ban in Bastrop County due to drought conditions) in conjunction with fire, water and wine, Tom Goynes has issued a dispensation that will allow alcoholic beverages to be brought into and consumed at Pecan Park for this event. Please be respectful of Tom and Paula, the campground and your fellow campers with regard to behavior while under the influence of "spirits", especially the world-famous ACR "grog" - a highly combustible and dangerous mixture of fruit punch and every kind of booze imaginable. All imbibers should bring a bottle of their favorite spirits to add to the mixture, and Gib will bring a stainless steel paddle to use for stirring the concoction so that it does not destroy the stirring paddle.
